DUNEDIN: GRADUATION DAY GEVOLD DOOR KONINGSDAG

Ik ben nu ongeveer twee maanden in Dunedin, Nieuw Zeeland. Dat is snel gegaan. Over een week verhuis ik naar mijn eigen appartement in de Duncan Street, aan de andere kant van het centrum. En ongeveer even ver lopen van de universiteit als ik nu elke dag doe, een half uurtje.
Vandaag, 3 mei 2014, is het hier Graduation Day. Meer dan 1000 studenten studeren af, en nemen hun bul in ontvangst. Dit fenomeen vindt twee keer per jaar plaats. Het spreekt voor zich dat dit gepaard gaat met veel ceremonie, en uiteraard grote feesten in het centrum. Hoewel ik uitgenodigd ben om ook aan de drank te gaan, heb ik het aanbod beleefd afgeslagen. Want morgen heb ik ook nog de viering van Koningsdag met de Dutchies voor de boeg, in het stadsdeel Wakari, een kilometer of 7 buiten het centrum. Ik neem me voor over een half jaar wel deel te nemen aan de festiviteiten rondom Graduation Day.
Het programma van Graduation Day van vandaag staat hieronder. 

Saturday 3 May 2014 at 1.00pm - Degrees and Diplomas in Applied Science, Biomedical Sciences, Consumer & Applied Sciences, Physical Education, and Surveying

9.30am Graduation Brunch
The Link, Information Services Building, corner Cumberland and Albany Streets
10.40am Thanksgiving Service 
The Hunter Centre, corner Frederick and Great King Streets
11.30am Graduation Procession 
Assemble at the School of Dentistry by 11.15am
11.50am Marshalling of Graduands
Dunedin Centre, Harrop Street.  Marshalling begins promptly at 12 noon. Please either come directly from the procession or else ensure you arrive by 11.50am.
You must be wearing the correct regalia and have your graduation order number sticker affixed to the left side of your gown. If you arrive late, or are improperly dressed, there is no guarantee you will be able to take part in the ceremony.
Once all graduands are in graduation order you will proceed to reserved seating in the main body of the Dunedin Town Hall.

12.15pm Doors to the Dunedin Town Hall (Moray Place) open for guests. Guests should be seated by 12.50pm
1.00pm Graduation Ceremony begins 
The Chancellor, Council and staff of the University enter the Town Hall promptly at 1.00pm.  (The audience is requested to rise as the procession enters).
The ceremony will begin with welcomes by the Chancellor and the Māori orator, followed by the National Anthem sung in Māori and English.
Conferring of Degrees and Awarding of Diplomas
The Vice-Chancellor or the relevant Pro-Vice Chancellor or Dean will announce graduands for each degree or diploma (eg "for graduation in the degree of Bachelor of Arts").
Remainder of the Ceremony
The ceremony continues with the graduation address and concludes with the singing of Gaudeamus.
Staff will then leave the Town Hall in procession, after which you and your guests are free to depart.

Het is overigens een zonnige zaterdag hier. Dus voor al die feesten in de stad kon het niet beter. 's Avonds nog even geskypt met Grubbenvorst. Daarvoor met Peter een discussie afgerond over een van de papers dat snel de deur uit moet. Hij vertrekt volgende week, precies op de dag dat ik verhuis, naar Berlijn voor een congres. Aanvankelijk had ik me daar ook voor opgegeven, maar heb afgezegd. Veel werk hier. En opnieuw weer die lange, slopende reis (heen en terug 38.000 kilometer!), dat had ik er niet voor over. 
Ik heb me wel aangemeld voor een congres in Zürich, eind juli. Voorlopig drink ik er maar een biertje op: dit keer een Stoke McCashin's Gold. Een echt Nieuw Zeelands bier.

Dat ik me wat afzijdig gehouden heb van Graduation Day ligt ook wel aan het feit, dat ik met de studenten hier nog niet zoveel van doen gehad heb. Een paar weken geleden werd wel gevraagd of ik een aantal colleges wilde geven, maar dat heb ik toch maar niet gedaan. Ik wil me voorlopig concentreren op het onderzoek- en laboratoriumwerk. Daarnaast heb ik ook nog mijn handen vol aan het schrijven van artikelen, o.a. met collega's in Rotterdam en Finland. Ook lopen er nog wat opdrachten voor de Wageningen Universiteit, o.a. de begeleiding van een Chinese student daar. Maar (oef!) mijn proefschrift is af. Het wachten is nu op een reactie van de manuscript-commissie.
